Writing an outstanding resume to land that desired job

Are you looking for a job? Do you have to write a resume or, just update that old resume? Sometimes writing a resume can be a daunting task and somewhat intimidating. It is hard to know what employers are looking for but, with a few simple steps to follow in the resume writing process, you are guaranteed to have a resume that will catch the eye of potential employers.

Step 1

Take a long hard look at the job description for the job you are applying. Concentrate particularly on the keywords used in the job description. The reason you are paying attention to keywords is that many larger employers use a computer scanning system, which will pull out particular keywords as a preliminary screen of incoming resumes. If you don’t use the keywords, your resume may never be read.

Step 2

Organize your resume so that it is an easy read for potential employers. Your resume should not be longer than 2 pages long and avoid the use of bullets and symbols. Many employers use a scanning system to receive resumes and bullets and symbols are not always read well.

Step 3

Your contact information should be the first piece of information read on the page. Follow up with your objective which should be closely aligned with the job description. Focus on the job for which you are applying, not what you intend to do five years down the road. Follow your objective with your education, beginning with most recent education. Chronology of a resume should always begin with most recent and end with the length of time furthest away. The next section should reflect your work history with brief statements to describe your job duties. Conclude with any specialized skills, which would be important to the particular job for which you are applying.

Step 4

When outlining what you have accomplished at each job, make sure you begin each statement with action verbs. “Designed,” “organized,” “lead,” and “facilitated” are strong action verbs.

Step 5

Talk about experience gained through volunteer activity, if it will be of interest to your potential employer. Highlight skills which might interest your potential employer. Mention professional certifications and association membership which might qualify you over another candidate for the same job.

Step 6

Proofread your resume. After you thoroughly proofread your resume, pass it along to a couple friends and colleagues to peruse and give you feedback. You do not want to send a resume to any potential employer with typographic errors or incorrect grammar.

Step 7

Every time you apply for a different job, you should plan to change your resume and to customize it for the employer and the job description. You want to make your resume stand out above other resumes.

Follow these steps and you will soon be getting phone calls from potential employers. Good luck in your job search.
